Continuous Improvement Process
OBJECTIVE
Continuous improvement
is an important element of modern manufacturing philosophy and a
cornerstone to both JIT and TQM. Continuous improvement is measured in
terms of producing things better, faster, and cheaper and being more
agile. Continuous improvement is thus synonymous with continuous
process improvement.
Value-added focus and
elimination of waste are two cornerstones of JIT management philosophy.
Kaizen, the Japanese management concepts of continuous improvement uses
I.E. as an improvement tool. Industrial Engineering (IE) plays an
important role to enhance improvement in productivity. Waste
identification is the first step to waste elimination. This course will
introduce IE as a Kaizen tool to eliminate muda. The traditional
function of Industrial Engineering has been “to measure and improve
productivity”. In simple terms, productivity is defined as the ratio
between output (some quantity or value of goods or services produced) and
input (some quantity or value of the resources used).
