Pump Principles, Operation and
Maintenance
OBJECTIVE
Pumps are
the hearts of any industrial plant. They transport fluid from storage
tanks to reactors, used in fire fighting services, in the food or
pharmaceutical industry etc. Their use is numerous and any operation
disruption will result in loss of production in the manufacturing plant.
The plant operation/ maintenance personnel
must understand the fundamentals underlining pumps performance and in
particular Centrifugal Pump. It is also important for process/ project
engineer to know the practical aspect of pump selection, so that proper
installation can be made. This is very important as most of the problems
in any pumping systems are usually due to improper sizing and selection of
the pump and the piping system during the design stage.
Pump materials and compatibility is very
important in any pumping system. Improper selection of materials will
result in very short pump operating life, high maintenance cost and even
result in catastrophic accidents in severe application, e.g. In the
petrochemical industry.
